Ocean to ocean, or in and back: the canal by cruise ship.

Few places in cruising match the Panama Canal for sheer spectacle: a ship lifted the height of a building, lock by lock, then lowered back to the sea on the other side of a continent. Panama Canal cruises 2027 fall in the canal’s regular cruise season, which runs from about October to May.

The 2026-27 Panama Canal Cruise Season

According to the Panama Canal Authority, as reported when the season opened in October 2026, more than 220 cruise transits are scheduled between October and May, 39 of them through the larger Neopanamax locks. Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are operating itineraries with both full and partial transits, and small expedition and sailing ships also cross. The canal season continues into early 2027, and lines are already selling the 2027-28 season.

How the Locks Work

The original canal raises ships about 85 feet to Gatun Lake through three lock systems: Gatun on the Atlantic side, and Pedro Miguel and Miraflores on the Pacific side. Electric locomotives guide ships through the original chambers. The wider Neopanamax locks, Agua Clara on the Atlantic side and Cocolí on the Pacific side, opened in 2016 and take the largest modern ships, which use tugboats instead of locomotives. Which locks your ship uses depends on its size.

Getting the Most From a Canal Day

  • Be on deck early; ships often approach the first locks around dawn.
  • Forward-facing public decks give the best views of the lock gates; balconies show the lock walls passing close by.
  • Listen for onboard commentary, often provided by a canal lecturer.
  • Bring sun protection and water; canal days are long and hot.

Choosing Panama Canal Cruises 2027

Full transits suit travelers with time and an appetite for sea days. Partial transits suit those who mainly want to experience the locks without one-way flights. Either way, look at the ports: many canal voyages also call in Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico. Our sister site South America Shore Excursions covers ports south of the canal, and Caribbean Cruise Ports covers Caribbean stops along the way.

Panama Canal Cruise Questions

What is the difference between a full and a partial Panama Canal cruise?

A full transit sails the whole canal between the Atlantic and Pacific, usually as part of a voyage between Florida and the US West Coast. A partial transit enters through the Atlantic-side locks into Gatun Lake and returns the same way, on a round trip from Florida.

How long does it take a ship to cross the canal?

A full transit generally takes most of a day. A partial transit spends part of a day in the locks and on Gatun Lake.

Which lines sail the Panama Canal in 2026-27?

Norwegian, Carnival and Royal Caribbean plan both full and partial transits this season, and smaller expedition and sailing ships also cross. Other lines that traditionally sail the canal, including Princess and Holland America, publish their own calendars; we check them when we quote.
