Central America Cruises 2027

Three ways to cruise Central America, and how to choose between them.

Central America cruises 2027 fall into three broad patterns, and knowing which one you are looking at makes choosing far easier. Some are Western Caribbean sailings that add one or two Central American ports; some are Panama Canal voyages that call along the way; and a smaller number follow the Pacific coast on repositioning routes between Florida and the US West Coast.

Three Ways to Cruise Central America

Western Caribbean with Central America

Seven nights or so from Florida, Galveston or New Orleans, typically pairing Mexican ports with Roatán or Belize, sometimes Costa Maya or Guatemala’s Caribbean coast.

Partial Panama Canal voyages

Usually ten nights or more round trip from Florida, adding Colon in Panama and Puerto Limón in Costa Rica, with a day spent in the canal itself.

Pacific coast and full transits

Ocean-to-ocean voyages that can call at Puntarenas or Puerto Caldera in Costa Rica, Puerto Quetzal in Guatemala, Corinto or San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua and Acajutla in El Salvador, plus Mexico’s Pacific resorts.

What to See Ashore

  • Costa Rica: rainforest walks and aerial trams, wildlife boat trips, beaches and national parks near Limón and Puntarenas.
  • Panama: the canal locks, the Panama Canal Railway, Portobelo’s forts and Panama City’s old quarter.
  • Guatemala: colonial Antigua and volcano views from the Pacific port; the Río Dulce and Maya sites from the Caribbean side.
  • Honduras: Roatán’s reef, beaches and snorkeling.
  • Belize: the barrier reef, cave tubing and Maya ruins such as Xunantunich.

Puntarenas is Costa Rica’s best-known Pacific cruise gateway.

Seasons and Weather

Most Central America cruises run from late fall to spring, which coincides with the dry season along the Pacific coast and much of the interior. The Caribbean side of Costa Rica and Panama can be wet at almost any time of year, so pack a light rain layer whatever the month. Summer and early fall overlap with the Atlantic hurricane season, and fewer ships sail the region then.

Booking Central America Cruises 2027

  • Decide first whether you want the canal; it narrows the field quickly.
  • If ruins or volcano visits matter, check how long the ship stays in each port — inland trips need a full day.
  • Compare departure ports: Florida for canal and Western Caribbean routes, Galveston for short Western Caribbean trips, the West Coast for Pacific routes.
  • Look at the ship’s size; some smaller ports suit mid-size ships better.

Holiday sailings around Christmas, New Year and spring break fill first, as they do everywhere; January and early February are often quieter. For help reading itinerary pages, our sister site Cruise Ship Itineraries explains sea days, tender ports and port times.

Central America Cruise Questions

Which countries do Central America cruises visit?

Most often Costa Rica, Panama, Honduras, Guatemala and Belize, with Nicaragua and El Salvador on some Pacific-side and canal itineraries. Mexico’s Yucatán ports are usually part of the same route.

When should I book a Central America cruise for 2027?

The 2027 winter season sailings are on sale now. Canal and longer Central America voyages have fewer departures than short Caribbean trips, so booking early gives the best cabin choice.
